What the Instant Asset Write-Off Means for SME Borrowing

Tax relief can support investment, but cash flow planning remains essential

Australian small businesses are again watching the instant asset write-off closely, with the federal government seeking to keep the threshold available for eligible assets.
For many SMEs, the measure can make planned investment in tools, vehicles, technology or machinery more attractive because the cost of qualifying assets may be deducted sooner rather than depreciated over several years.

The finance lesson is important: a tax deduction is not the same as cash in the bank. If a business borrows to buy equipment, it still needs to meet loan or lease repayments on time, manage GST timing, preserve working capital and ensure the asset will generate enough operational benefit to justify the commitment. The write-off may improve the after-tax economics of a purchase, but it should not be treated as a reason to buy assets that do not fit a clear commercial plan.

This is particularly relevant while operating costs remain elevated and lenders continue to scrutinise serviceability. SMEs considering vehicles, machinery, fit-outs or digital upgrades should look beyond the headline deduction and assess the total cost of ownership. That includes interest, fees, insurance, maintenance, installation, downtime during implementation and any balloon or residual payment due at the end of a finance term.

For owners comparing equipment finance, timing also matters. Purchasing before a tax deadline may help with deduction timing, but rushed applications can lead to weaker decisions. A better approach is to prepare current financials, confirm the asset purpose, estimate revenue or productivity gains and check whether the business can still handle repayments if sales soften or supplier costs rise.

Before committing, SMEs should:

  • Confirm eligibility rules with an accountant, including turnover, asset cost and installation timing.
  • Separate the tax benefit from the cash flow impact of the loan or lease.
  • Compare secured, unsecured and asset-backed structures based on total cost, not just speed.
  • Model repayments under different terms, rates and residual settings.
  • Keep enough working capital available for wages, suppliers, BAS and unexpected expenses.

The write-off can be useful when it brings forward investment that a business genuinely needs. The risk is using a tax incentive to justify unnecessary borrowing. For Australian SMEs, the strongest outcome comes from aligning tax planning, asset strategy and finance structure before signing a contract.

Fresh consumer warnings about online vehicle scams are a timely reminder for caravan buyers to slow down before transferring deposits, sharing identity documents or arranging settlement.
