The Australian marine industry is currently facing a significant challenge due to a critical shortage of skilled labour.
According to the 2026 National Jobs & Skills Survey conducted by the Boating Industry Association (BIA), over 90% of businesses within the sector have expressed deep concern about the lack of qualified personnel.
This shortage is not only affecting daily operations but also having a tangible impact on the financial performance of marine businesses across the country.

The marine industry is a substantial contributor to Australia's economy, generating an annual turnover exceeding $10.2 billion and providing employment for approximately 35,000 individuals. The sector encompasses a diverse range of businesses, including designers, manufacturers, retailers, marinas, and tradespeople. The current workforce deficit poses a threat to the industry's ability to maintain its growth trajectory and meet the increasing demand for marine products and services.

Andrew Fielding, CEO of the BIA, emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue. He highlighted the need for targeted investment in workforce development, education, and vocational training to bridge the skills gap. Without such initiatives, the industry risks facing prolonged operational challenges and potential financial setbacks.

For individuals considering a career in the marine sector, this presents a unique opportunity. The demand for skilled workers is high, and businesses are actively seeking to fill various roles. Prospective employees can look forward to engaging work environments, opportunities for career advancement, and the chance to contribute to a vital part of Australia's economy.

In response to the survey findings, the BIA is advocating for collaborative efforts between industry stakeholders and educational institutions. By developing comprehensive training programs and promoting the marine industry as a viable and rewarding career path, it is hoped that the current workforce shortages can be alleviated.

As the industry navigates these challenges, the focus remains on sustaining growth and innovation. Addressing the skilled labour shortage is paramount to ensuring that Australia's marine sector continues to thrive and meet the evolving needs of boating enthusiasts and professionals alike.
