The Australian marine industry is currently grappling with a significant shortage of skilled labour, a challenge that is affecting operational capacities and financial performance across the sector.
According to the 2026 National Jobs & Skills Survey conducted by the Boating Industry Association (BIA), more than 90% of marine businesses have expressed deep concern over the lack of qualified personnel.

The marine sector is a substantial contributor to the Australian economy, generating an annual turnover exceeding $10.2 billion and providing employment for approximately 35,000 individuals across over 2,000 businesses. These enterprises encompass a wide range of activities, including design, manufacturing, retail, marina operations, and various trades.

BIA CEO Andrew Fielding highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating that the workforce shortages have escalated beyond administrative challenges and now pose a direct threat to the industry's prosperity. He emphasized the urgent need for targeted investment in workforce development, education, and vocational training to address these critical gaps.

For individuals considering a career in the marine industry, this shortage presents a unique opportunity. The demand for skilled workers is high, and businesses are actively seeking to fill positions across various roles. Prospective employees can look forward to engaging work environments, opportunities for advancement, and the chance to contribute to a vital sector of the Australian economy.

In response to these challenges, the BIA is advocating for increased collaboration between industry stakeholders and educational institutions to develop training programs that align with the specific needs of the marine sector. By fostering a skilled workforce, the industry aims to sustain its growth and continue its significant contribution to the national economy.

As the marine industry navigates these workforce challenges, it remains committed to delivering high-quality products and services to boating enthusiasts across Australia. The sector's resilience and proactive approach to addressing these issues will be crucial in maintaining its position as a powerhouse of the Australian economy.
